For the Birds

2023

84" x 85"

It is always a joy to finish a hand-worked quilt, and to remember the many happy hours spent in its creation. One of the benefits of hand-applique or hand-piecing is its portability - this one came on many travels with me including a long flight to Vietnam with an overnight spent sleeping in the terminal in Japan. Did you know hand-sewing has been proven to lower blood pressure, heart rate, and stress levels? As I am not the calmest of airline passengers, this is why it came with me on a long flight to Vietnam with an overnight spent sleeping in the terminal in Japan. Say, what's that announcement about further delays for our flight? Just keep on sewing, Lor, keep on sewing. Please just don't confiscate my 3-inch blunt-tipped school scissors, and I will be fine. JUST FINE.

Why is this quilt called For the Birds? Because many of the fabrics used in the melon-shaped pieces feature little birds. I'm a sucker for snapping up fabric with birds on them. You can find them if you look closely enough.

Hand-appliqued, hand-pieced, stationary machine quilted (both walking foot and free-motion)
